Semester 3

Semester 3 Simplified B.pharm Notes:-

Subjects in Semester III of B.pharm course

1. Pharmaceutical Organic Chemistry II – Theory & Practical

2. Physical Pharmaceutics I –Theory & Practical

3. Pharmaceutical Microbiology –Theory & Practical

4. Pharmaceutical Engineering –Theory & Practical

B.pharm 3rd semester Notes:-

1. PHARMACEUTICAL ORGANIC CHEMISTRY –II    (Theory) & (Practicals)

Pharmacy has it's base as chemistry! therefore chemistry will be studied in various forms throughout the course. If you remember a part of Organic chemistry was studied in the previous semester as well.

What sets apart organic chemistry II from that of previous semester is that this time knowledge about six membered ring - benzene, phenols, aromatic amines, fats and oils, cycloalkanes and  polynuclear hydrocarbons will be imparted.
Examples of polynuclear hydrocarbons: Naphthalene, Phenanthrene etc.
Benzene is the most important and basic ring which is found in most of the drug structures. It is more than just a ring to a medicinal chemist! In this semester properties of benzene and it's conformations are given importance along with properties of various polynuclear ring systems.

Study Tips: No.1 Rule - Don't byheart chemistry, practice chemistry. Best way to ace this subject would be looking at the structures everyday. Practice the structures, write it down on a paper and look at it every morning.

2. PHYSICAL PHARMACEUTICS-I (Theory) & (Practical)

Physical pharmaceutics is a subject that connects the physicochemical properties of the drug with it's pharmaceutical formulation. What we learn inthis subject directly deals with the formulation research, development and stability. Basically we get to know how the 'drug molecules behavior' affects the dosage form.

Knowledge imparted through this subject (in this particular semester): solubility of drugs, states of matter and it's properties, surface and interfacial phenomenon, complexation and protein binding, pH buffers and isotonic solutions along with general introduction on physicochemical properties of the drug - refractive index, dielectric constant, dipole moment, dissociation constant and optical rotation.

So to join the dots; We study how the solubility of the drug or the type of tension it faces or its refractive index affects the formulation and it's stability. We study this so that we can reciprocate it practically and work towards achieving formulation stability and success in the market.
Study tips:
                  1) Watch videos to understand the concept. It's easier to understand when the process is explained through animation videos.

3.PHARMACEUTICAL MICROBIOLOGY (Theory) & (Practical)
Pharmaceutical microbiology deals with the study of microorganisms which are of importance in pharmaceutical field.

Preparations/ formulations like vaccines, antibiotics, enzymes, vitamins - having their components from a microbiological source need special atmosphere and care. Certain microorganisms when present in formulations pose a threat to life.

For these reasons we study pharmaceutical microbiology - for production of biologicals, to study pharmaceutical contaminants - degradation and deterioration caused by microorganisms, to check antimicrobial activity of drugs.

Knowledge imparted through this subject: Study of morphology, classification, cultivation of bacteria, fungi and virus, principle and procedure of bacterial staining techniques, different types of sterilization and evaluation of it's efficacy, disinfectants and it's evaluation, microbiological assay, aseptic area and laminar air flow equipment, microbiological spoilage, preservatives.

Study Tips:-

1) It's a vast portion and gets confusing as we proceed. therefore I recommend to avoid the last minute studies and do it atleast 1 week before exams.

2) Watching videos of these processes would definitely cut down your burden of reading and understanding.

4. PHARMACEUTICAL ENGINEERING (Theory) & (Practical)

Ever thought about studying engineering after entering pharmacy? Pharmaceutical engineering is a subject tilted towards the physics behind working of a machine. We need machines to prepare and pack our desired formulations. We also learn about the unit operations in pharmaceutical industry.

Unit operations are individual part of a multipart process.
Examples of unit operation: Mixing, Evaporation, Size reduction, Size separation etc.

Aesthetics, stability and activity of final pharmaceutical product depends upon how well its been made. 'How well' it's made is determined by the how well the unit operation is performed by various equipments.

Knowledge imparted through this subject: flow of fluids, heat transfer, size reduction and separation, drying, mixing, filtration, centrifugation along with individual working principles of equipments in each of these segments.

Study tips:

1) It's a vast portion and gets confusing as we proceed. therefore I recommend to avoid the last minute studies and do it atleast 1 week before exams.

2) Watching videos of these processes would definitely cut down your burden of reading and understanding.
